Michael Pollan Really Goes for it

October 10, 2008

All around food rockstar Michael Pollan, author of, most recently In Defense of Food and The Omnivore’s Dilemma, recently published an open letter to the next president of the United States (Obama), informing him that while he doesn’t know it yet, food policy will be among the most important issues he will have to face in his first term.In the massive, 8,000 word letter, Pollan goes through the impacts of food on national security, the economy, health care, and of course, the environment. He calls the current food system “in shambles,” and warns against continuing the 1970’s corn subsidy systems that he has so often been a critic of, and suggests, among other things, putting an organic garden on the white house lawn. The letter is a bit of a whirlwind, sweeping through the largest food issues and then on to specific policy decisions. Not much is tremendously new, but the more we can hammer this kind of issue in some of the largest mouthpieces in all the land, the better, and Pollan is one guy capable of getting an audience.

When will Thomas Friedman read Michael Pollan?

Would not a panel somewhere with Will Allen, Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Roger Dorian, and Thomas Friedman talking about “energy technologies”(Friedman’s ET) , “sun based fertility”(Pollan), worms, wastes, and fertility(Will Allen), and the like, hasten the day when Michelle Obama turns over the first dirt at the White House Victory Garden?
