Farm Update Friday October 18

October 18, 2008

Potato Day. Lee and Vivian helped dig up all five varieties that were growing on the farm. We’ll be selling them at market as we see fit. Vivian and Maclovia also got to work getting the majority of sweet potato’s out of the ground and into Ida’s room in JE.

Sweet potatoes took a little getting used to because they twist and turn in the ground, so if the soil was hard and you tried to pull one up, it would snap in half. We got the hang of it eventually, and you can expect to see them at farmer’s market in about two weeks.

Unfortunately, 3 beds of little gem had to be composted because it had gone to seed – with lettuce you call that “bolting,” which looks like a skinny spire of bitter lettuce.

A productive day, and a beautiful one at that. We made our first potato pizza with a bunch of harvesters and harvest leaders that came up.
